HISTORY The Automotive Index, Inc is a Washington State business that primarily assists law enforcement agencies with vehicle identification and victim assistance. But is has a rich history spanning more than 85 years. Founded in 1922 by Mr. Claire Crawford, James R Fetridge's grandfather, the company printed and sold the classic Vehicle Mug Book. The original intent and market for the book was for used car salesman to accurately identify and value automobiles for purchase and resale. In the 1930's as print magazine's entered the marketplace, a new focus came about for the Mug Book - police, law enforcement and other institutional buyers. In the early 1960's Mr. Crawford passed away and his wife Betty took over management of the publication for a short time. In 1967 after serving in the Vietnam War and returning home, the grandson James R. Fetridge Jr. took over full time management of the company. In 1971 the company moved from California to Washington State where Mr. Fetridge continued operations and maintained production through the 2007 years of issue. In May 2007, the company transferred ownership to a new investment group in Bellevue, WA. After a location change and some reorganization, new efforts to reconnect with customers began starting January 2009. There are many exciting changes planned for the publication in the months and years ahead.
